   Healthy Beef... How Did We Ever Start Eating the Other Kind???

    Allan Savory, a holistic resource manager of great note, tells us how we came to eat grain-fed cattle.

  "Grain dealers perfected some form of storage... governments began to shelter farmers from price fluctuations...food markets became linked to other markets... excess oil production was used to make fertilizers and pesticides for grain farming.

When excessive amounts of grain were produced as a result, food industry marketers convinced Americans that grain-fed cattle were superior in taste and redefined the cattle business."    

                            However:

A "small, informal blind taste test" conducted by Consumer Reports found " no meaningful differences in taste between steaks from cattle raised on grass and steaks from cattle fed a diet of corn and soybeans formulated to marble their muscle with fat."

  • With respect to leanness, grass-fed meat is more like wild game than feedlot meat.

  • Due to gastric distress caused by eating "junk food, The Academy of Sciences reports that as many as one out of every three cattle may play host to the deadliest strain of e-coli. GRASS FED cattle have almost none of this bacteria.

  • Consumers often choose the most "marbled" cuts as an indication of tenderness, yet marbling accounts for a mere 10% of the variation in tenderness.

 

    Ever wonder what the feedlots FEED animals? Direct Quote:      "The current feeding program consists of a highly efficient cost-effective ration with the following ingredients: dry rolled corn, high moisture rolled corn, corn gluten, tub ground dry alfalfa hay, molasses and liquid protein supplements.  Also included in the ration is a complete vitamin and antibiotic package that addresses the specific nutritional needs of each category of cattle on feed." 

   Fact: Many feedlots add chicken excrement as protein...
